Biography of Isabel Sanford
Isabel Sanford, born Eloise Gwendolyn Sanford, was an American actress who made history in 1981 as the first African-American to win an Emmy Award for "Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series". She was born in 1917 in Harlem, New York, as the youngest of seven children, and became the sole survivor among her siblings. From a young age, Sanford was drawn to acting, despite her mother's disapproval. She would often sneak out of the house to perform in nightclubs.
Early Career
Sanford's talent was recognized when she won a talent show at the legendary Apollo Theatre in Harlem, solidifying her belief in her chosen path. She dropped out of school and worked as a janitor before joining the American Negro Theatre, where her acting career began. In 1946, she made her first appearance in the play "On Strivers Row".
Mid-Career and Personal Life
After getting married, Sanford took a break from her career to focus on her family and children. During this time, she worked as a clerk in New York. In the 1960s, Sanford returned to her true passion, the stage, and made her Broadway debut in the play "Amen Corner". It was there that she caught the attention of Stanley Kramer, who cast her in his film "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" in 1967. Although Catherine Hepburn received accolades for her role in the film, Sanford's career was set in motion.
Rise to Fame
Sanford's breakthrough role came in the popular sitcom "All in the Family" as Louise Jefferson. She continued to portray her character, alongside her on-screen husband Sherman Hemsley, in the spin-off series "The Jeffersons". In 1981, Sanford made history as the first African-American to win an Emmy Award for "Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series".
Later Career and Legacy
After the end of "The Jeffersons", Sanford and Hemsley continued to work together in commercials and appeared in reruns on cable channels. Throughout her career, Sanford was nominated for seven Emmy Awards and received five Golden Globe nominations. She also appeared in numerous other television series, including "The Love Boat", "Roseanne", "Dream On", and "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air". In total, Sanford had over 50 roles in film and television. She was married to William 'Sonny' Richmond, who passed away in 1960. They had three children together. Isabel Sanford passed away at the age of 86 on July 9, 2004, due to heart problems. She was buried at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills cemetery in Los Angeles.
