Felix Otto Dessoff was a German pianist and music educator who made significant contributions to the field of music.
Early Life and Education
Felix Otto Dessoff was born on 14 January 1835, in Leipzig, Germany. He began his musical studies at a young age, taking piano lessons from Friedrich Wieck, the father of the renowned pianist and composer Clara Schumann. In 1858, he enrolled in the Leipzig Conservatory, where he studied under the esteemed music theorist Moritz Hauptmann.
Teaching Career
In 1871, Dessoff became a professor at the Cologne Conservatory. During his tenure there, he mentored numerous talented musicians, including the renowned conductor Willem Mengelberg, the pianist Elli Ney, and the composer Frederick Corder. Notably, Ney later expressed her distaste for Dessoff due to his Jewish heritage.
Musical Works
Dessoff composed various chamber pieces for the piano, including sonatas and character pieces. He also arranged works by prominent composers such as Beethoven and Weber for piano. His arrangements were highly regarded for their technical proficiency and musicality.
Accolades and Recognition
Dessoff's talent and dedication as an educator and pianist were widely recognized during his lifetime. The renowned music critic and historian W.L. Hubbard described Dessoff as "in the front rank of modern teachers and among the most prominent modern pianists." Additionally, the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg dedicated his third set of "Lyric Pieces" (Op. 43, 1886) to Dessoff, a testament to the esteem in which he was held by his contemporaries.
