Yuri Vlasov: A Multifaceted Life
Early Life and Athletics CareerYuri Vlasov was born on December 5, 1935, in Makeyevka, Ukraine. He graduated from the Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy in Moscow in February 1959. Vlasov was a skilled weightlifter, competing on the Soviet national team from 1957 to 1967 and winning the world heavyweight championship four times (1959, 1961, 1962, and 1963). At the 1960 Olympics in Rome, he earned the gold medal in weightlifting.
Literary Career
After retiring from weightlifting in 1968, Vlasov turned to writing professionally. He initially published under the pseudonym "Vladimirov." In 1987-1988, he served as chairman of the Soviet Federation of Athletic Gymnastics.
Political Engagement
Vlasov became politically active during the late Soviet era. In 1989, he was elected to the Congress of People's Deputies of the USSR and joined the Interregional Group of Deputies. He was a sharp critic of the Communist Party and the KGB.
Vlasov continued his political involvement in the post-Soviet era. In 1990-1991, he headed the Social Protection Fund for Muscovites. During the August 1991 coup attempt against Gorbachev, he defended the White House.
National-Patriotic Opposition
In the early 1990s, Vlasov aligned himself with the radical-democratic opposition and later the left-wing and national-patriotic opposition. He called for the resignation of Boris Yeltsin in 1992 and unsuccessfully ran for mayor of Moscow in 1993.
Member of Parliament
Vlasov was elected to the fifth State Duma in 1993 as a representative from Moscow's North-Western constituency. He served on the committees for local self-government and security. In 1994, he unsuccessfully sought the position of Duma speaker.
Presidential Candidate
In 1996, Vlasov ran for president of Russia as a candidate of the "Power to the People" electoral bloc but received less than one percent of the vote.
Later Years
Vlasov continued to be active in public life, expressing his views on current events and social issues. He passed away in 2017 at the age of 81.

Yuri Vlasov was a remarkable figure known for his athletic achievements, literary works, and political engagement. He is remembered as a talented weightlifter, outspoken dissident, and passionate defender of Russian national interests.
