Biography of Ivan Borisenko
Ivan Ivanovich Borisenko, an ace pilot of the Guards, was born on September 28, 1923, in the city of Zaporizhia, in a working-class family. He completed 9 years of education in secondary school and attended Zaporizhia Aero Club. In 1940, he joined the Red Army. In 1942, he graduated from the Kachinsk Military Aviation School for Pilots. He served on the front lines of the Great Patriotic War from September 1942.
War Hero
Ivan Borisenko fought in the 296th Fighter Aviation Regiment, which later became the 73rd Guards, and participated in battles on the Stalingrad, Southwest, 1st, 2nd, and 4th Ukrainian fronts. He was wounded in action and flew on Yak fighter planes. By March 1945, he held the position of Deputy Squadron Commander in the 73rd Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment. He completed 245 combat sorties, engaged in 63 aerial battles, personally shot down 23 enemy planes and 1 observation balloon. In group combat, he shot down 2 enemy planes and 2 observation balloons.
During the war, Ivan Borisenko completed a total of 260 successful combat sorties, participated in 70 aerial battles, and personally shot down 26 enemy planes and 2 with his comrades. On May 15, 1946, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for his courage and military valor demonstrated in battles against the enemy.
Post-War Service
After the war, Ivan Borisenko continued to serve in the Air Force. In 1953, he graduated from the Military Air Academy and mastered several types of jet fighters. In 1975, Colonel Ivan Borisenko retired from military service. He lived and worked in Kyiv. He was awarded the Orders of Lenin, the Red Banner (thrice), Bogdan Khmelnitsky 3rd Class, the Patriotic War 1st Class, the Red Banner of Labour, the Red Star (twice), "For Service to the Motherland in the Armed Forces of the USSR" 3rd Class, and several medals. He passed away on April 22, 1988.
