Ivan Bosilcic: Serbian Actor with a Slavic Soul
Ivan Bosilcic, a Serbian actor of theater and film with a Slavic soul, has built a successful international career, gaining popularity not only in his homeland but also in Russia.
Early Life and Education
Born on January 15, 1979, in Uzice, Serbia, Ivan's grandfather had come to Russia in the 1950s to study military affairs, falling in love with Russian culture. Music filled his home from an early age, and he grew up as a talented and artistic child, participating in folk dances. In high school, his musical talent emerged, leading him to form the band Rok Apoteka. Initially, Ivan aspired to teach children or pursue music. After graduating in 2001, he moved to "Serbian Athens," Novi Sad, where he joined the Academy of Arts at the University of Novi Sad. Under the guidance of playwright and theater director Vida Ognjenovic, he honed his acting skills. Later, Ivan relocated to Belgrade, Serbia's capital, to further his career.
Theater and Film Career
Ivan Bosilcic debuted as a voice actor, lending his voice to Donatello in the animated series "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" and Joey Wheeler in "Yu-Gi-Oh!" In 2004, he gained attention in the television film "On the Harmful Consequences of Tobacco Smoking." As his career progressed, he starred as an accountant in "The Dollars Are Coming," which featured a young Milos Bikovic. In 2008, Ivan added "On the Beautiful Blue Danube" to his filmography, receiving an award at the National Film Festival in Nis for his portrayal of Vasile. A few years later, he appeared in the television series "Sin of Her Mother."
Bosilcic's success in Serbia was not confined to the silver screen. He achieved stardom on the stage of Belgrade's Terazije Theatre, Serbia's Broadway. His first leading role was Loyko Zobar in the musical "Tabor Goes to Heaven," a beloved production in Serbia. His velvety baritone, physicality, and emotional delivery quickly made him a musical theater star. He participated in numerous acclaimed productions, including "Chicago," "Limelight," and "Jasmine at the Crossroads." In 2007, he joined the cast of "Les Misérables" at the Madlenianum Opera and Theater, followed by roles in "Hamlet" and "Twelfth Night," for which he won an award as Best Young Actor.
Breakthrough in Russia
In 2015, Bosilcic starred in the remake of the iconic American television series "ER," portraying Dr. Nebojsa Arsenijevic, the Serbian counterpart to George Clooney's Doug Ross. Subsequently, he appeared in the Serbian films "Flight Fear" and "Moone." Ivan's fame in Russia soared after the release of the television series "Hotel Russia" in 2017. In this melodrama and detective thriller, he transformed into Manuel Santos, a Nicaraguan revolutionary. Co-starring with Russian actors such as Ekaterina Vilkova and Pavel Trubiner, Bosilcic's striking presence and acting abilities won him a legion of fans.
His subsequent projects in Russia included the comedy "How to Meet a Holiday Not Like a Child," which received lukewarm reception. A more successful role came with his portrayal of Andreas in the series "Girls Never Give Up." This lyrical comedy explored the complexities of women seeking happiness, earning mixed but generally positive reviews. In 2019, Ivan appeared in Vladimir Kofman's crime thriller "Iliana. Believe Me." Although featuring a stellar cast including Viktor Sukhorukov and Ina Barron, the film had a limited impact on Bosilcic's career.
Personal Life
Ivan Bosilcic has been happily married to Jelena Tomasevic, a popular Serbian pop singer and Eurovision 2008 participant, since 2011. The couple welcomed their daughter, Ninoslava, in 2012.
