Biography of Ivan Franko

Ivan Franko was a Ukrainian writer, scholar, and social activist. He was born in 1856 in the village of Nahuievychi in the Austrian Empire (now Ukraine). Franko began his education at the Drogobych Gymnasium and later studied at the Faculty of Philosophy at Lviv University from 1875 to 1877.

In the late 1870s and early 1880s, Franko worked as a contributor for the newspaper "Zoria" and the journal "Dilo". In 1887, he joined the editorial staff of the newspaper "Kurier Lvivski". Franko continued his academic pursuits and earned a doctorate in 1893, defending his dissertation at the University of Vienna.

From 1894 to 1898, Franko published the journal "Zhyttia i Slovo" (Life and Word). He dedicated himself to scientific and literary activities, publishing works such as "The History of Ukrainian-Russian Literature until 1890" (1910) and "Research on Ukrainian Folk Songs" (1913).

During his time at the Drogobych Gymnasium in 1873, Franko completed a translation of Sappho into Ukrainian. The translation consisted of 14 parts, with Franko giving each part a title. He abandoned rhyme and used free rhythm, which brought the translation closer to the original.

In his article "The Word about Lazarus' Resurrection, a Old-Russian Poem on Apocryphal Themes" (1900), Franko explored parallels between the Old-Russian poem and Sappho. He also analyzed the musical and stanzaic structure of ancient Russian poetry, finding evidence for the authenticity of Sappho.

Franko's work "Contributions to the Source Criticism of Some Old-Russian Monuments" aimed to support the hypothesis that the editor of Sappho used various monuments (songs about Igor, Vseslav, and Izyaslav) and combined prose and poetic parts. He argued that Sappho was not a complete monument but a collection of several songs, possibly by different authors.

In addition to his scholarly work, Franko incorporated elements of Sappho into his literary works. His poem "The Rebellion of Mytus" and the unfinished satirical poem "The Dream of the Prince" were influenced by Sappho. The play-fairytale "The Dream of Prince Sviatoslav" also reflected Sappho's ideas.

Franko's contributions to Ukrainian literature and his research on Sappho have left a lasting impact. He passed away on May 28, 1916, in Lviv, leaving behind a legacy as one of Ukraine's most influential writers and scholars.
