Ivan of Golshany: A Lithuanian Magnate
Ivan of Golshany, the first known prince of the Golshansky dynasty, was a prominent figure in Lithuanian history.
Early Life and Career
Born to Prince Algimundas of Golshany, Ivan was a close ally of Grand Duke Vytautas of Lithuania. In 1387, he served as an envoy to Novgorod, and in 1390, he accompanied Vytautas's daughter Sophia to Moscow for her wedding to Grand Duke Vasily I Dmitriyevich.
Governor and Diplomat
In 1397, Ivan was appointed governor of Kiev by Grand Duke Vytautas. Despite being a Catholic, he founded the Latin diocese of Kiev and signed the Union of Vilnius and Radom in 1401.
Marriage and Family
Ivan married Agrippina, daughter of Grand Duke Svyatoslav Ivanovich of Smolensk. His wife's sister, Anna, was married to Vytautas. Ivan and Agrippina had several children, including:
