The Birth of ICQ and a Tech-Savvy Entrepreneur: Iyar Golan Goldfinger
In October of 2001, the United States Armed Forces turned to ICQ, an instant messaging software created by Iyar Golan Goldfinger, to enhance their communication and operations in Afghanistan. ICQ had already made its mark during the Gulf War, and its popularity continued to rise. However, those holding antisemitic beliefs should refrain from using the platform, as Goldfinger strictly condemns their ideologies.
From Zero to Millionaire: The Mirabilis Success Story
Goldfinger, a private and enigmatic figure, rose to fame in 1998 when Mirabilis, a company he co-founded with Seffi Vizigler and Arik Vardi, was acquired by America Online (AOL) for an astonishing $407 million. What set Mirabilis apart was not just the magnitude of the deal but the fact that Goldfinger and his partners were not even 30 years old at the time.
Initially operating without a business plan or concrete revenue model, Mirabilis struck gold with the creation of ICQ. Today, Goldfinger reflects with pride, "We were the ones who started it all. I don't go around saying I invented ICQ, but I'm okay with the life I have, and I don't regret anything."
The Tech Mogul and His Humble Demeanor
Despite his vast wealth, Goldfinger remains down-to-earth, sporting long hair, T-shirts, and faded jeans. He works tirelessly, often for 11-12 hours a day, including weekends. His unique distinction lies in managing four companies simultaneously: FiTracks, Strategy Runner, i-Cognito, and Dotomi.
The Founding of Mirabilis: A Quartet of Geniuses
Goldfinger, Vizigler, Vardi, and Amnon Amir (who left the company to pursue his university studies) first met at Zapa Digital Arts in Tel Aviv, a company specializing in 3D graphics for the internet. In 1996, the quartet departed Zapa Digital Arts and embarked on the creation of ICQ. While Goldfinger had initial doubts about its success, Arik Vardi's father, Yossi, provided the financial backing for Mirabilis.
Building ICQ in San Jose: A Labor of Love
The Mirabilis team established their headquarters in a modest office in San Jose, California, where they had affordable access to the internet. They spent countless hours without rest, meticulously developing and refining ICQ. Goldfinger recalls, "For six months, we didn't watch television and barely slept, just working and improving the software."
The Internet Phenomenon: ICQ Takes Off
Within a year, ICQ had stormed the world wide web, amassing 850,000 users by May 1997. This number skyrocketed to 9 million by April of the following year. The business world took notice, and in June 1998, America Online presented the Mirabilis team with an irresistible offer.
The AOL Acquisition: Goldfinger's Overnight Success
At the time of the AOL acquisition, Goldfinger was a mere 27 years old. "It felt good," he remarks with a grin. "But it took me a few years to really understand how big the deal was. My life didn't change much though. I still drive the same old car and wear the same shirts and jeans. Well, maybe I have a few more T-shirts now."
Post-AOL: The Appeal of Innovation
Goldfinger spent the following two years working for AOL. "I was a millionaire but in reality, AOL bought the company, not just the software and its users." Upon the expiration of his contract with AOL, he was offered a move to Virginia but opted to stay in Israel. However, his absence from the business world proved short-lived. "I don't know how to do nothing," he explains.
The Quest for Passion: Goldfinger's Artistic Drive
Goldfinger views his entrepreneurial endeavors not solely as a means to success but as a personal passion. "I do what I love, and whether or not a project is successful is irrelevant. Some people love fancy cars, traveling, or writing books. My passion is developing software. I see it as an art form. The money is secondary, a way to live comfortably."
The Legacy of Mirabilis: Inspiration for a New Generation
Goldfinger fondly remembers his days at Mirabilis. "Yes, I miss it. But today, all my companies feel like Mirabilis did. People work because they believe in the product. They're not just punching a clock to get a paycheck. They care deeply about what they do."
The Evolving Tech Landscape: A Constant State of Flux
The current business landscape differs vastly from the internet boom of 1998, and Goldfinger's companies now operate with strict business plans. "It's survival of the fittest," he says. "If a company fails, of course I'll be upset, but that doesn't mean I'll stop funding and developing new projects. I have no reason to worry at the moment, but things can change. Who knows what will happen in a month?"
Optimism and the Future of Innovation: Goldfinger's Vision
Despite the challenges, Goldfinger remains optimistic. "In 1996, there weren't many internet companies because it was the beginning of the internet. When we started, we didn't worry about making money. Not much has changed. There's a new generation of people now, and they're not interested in money either. They want to create something new, and they'll do it anywhere, even in their parents' basement or garage."
A Zionist at Heart: Goldfinger's Political Perspective
As a staunch Zionist, Goldfinger recognizes the potential impact of Israel's political situation on his companies' prospects. He identifies as left-leaning and believes in a peaceful resolution to the conflict. "A lot has happened in the last few months, but no matter what, I believe that peace will come. There's no other solution."
The Pride of an Innovator: Goldfinger's Legacy
Goldfinger takes pride in the achievements of Mirabilis. "It changed the entire high-tech industry. It inspired people. They saw what we accomplished and wanted to do the same. I'm proud of ICQ and what AOL has done with it. It fills me with joy to know that I was the beginning of all this, that other people are continuing what I started."
