Early Life and Education

Hendrik Alla (born 1947) is an Estonian politician, theatre director, critic, and manager. He graduated from Tallinn Secondary School No. 22 in 1965. His parents, Hendrik Allik and Olga Lauristin, were active in the Estonian labor movement. He is the half-brother of Estonian politician and academic Marju Lauristin.

Theatre Career

In 1972, Alla graduated from the University of Tartu with a degree in sociology. In 1977, he became the head of the Theatre Department of the Ministry of Culture of the Estonian SSR. Alla was a co-founder and the first editor-in-chief of the Estonian magazine "Theatre, Music, Cinema."

Political Career

Alla joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1971. He was elected to the Supreme Council of the Estonian SSR in 1990 and served until 1992. From 1991 to 1995, he was the artistic director of the Ugala Theatre in Viljandi and its director from 2001 to 2003.

Government and Parliamentary Service

Alla joined the Estonian Coalition Party in 1994, serving as a member until its dissolution in 2000. He served as Estonian Minister of Culture from 1995 to 1999. After leaving the Coalition Party, Alla became a member of the Estonian People's Union in 2003. He has been elected to the Estonian Parliament, Riigikogu, in the 8th and 10th sessions.
