Breakthrough and ATP Triumphs

Eltingh made his professional debut in 1988 and tasted his first ATP Challenger tournament victories in 1990 alongside Jan-Hendrik Davids. A breakthrough year followed in 1991, when he reached the fourth round at Wimbledon in singles, propelling him into the top 100 in the world rankings. In doubles, he entered the top 100 after capturing his maiden ATP title in Palermo alongside Tom Kempers. By the end of the season, Eltingh had secured three additional ATP tournaments with three different partners, including Paul Haarhuis.

Partnership with Paul Haarhuis

Eltingh forged a successful partnership with Paul Haarhuis, which would become a defining aspect of his career. Together, they clinched six tournaments in 1993, culminated by their triumph at the ATP World Championships. The following year, their partnership reached new heights with eight tournament victories, including the Australian Open and US Open. They closed out the season as the world's second-ranked doubles team, a position they maintained until early 1995, when Eltingh ascended to the top of the rankings.

Success Beyond Doubles

Alongside his dominance in doubles, Eltingh achieved notable success in singles. He won three tournaments and defeated top-ranked opponents such as Pete Sampras and Jim Courier. His highest singles ranking came in February 1995, where he reached 19th place.

Continued Dominance and Career Grand Slam

Eltingh and Haarhuis continued their reign in doubles, winning another six tournaments in 1995, including the French Open. They also reached the semifinals of the Australian Open. These achievements, along with their impressive performance at the Davis Cup, earned them a berth in the Grand Slam Cup at the end of the season. At the tournament, they secured victories over top-ranked opponents before ultimately falling in the quarterfinals.

In 1998, Eltingh's partnership with Jonas Björkman produced his fourth Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. They then joined forces with Haarhuis to secure the French Open title, completing Eltingh's career Grand Slam with a historic Wimbledon victory. Their eight tournament victories and a championship at the ATP World Championships solidified their dominance in the doubles circuit.

Retirement and Legacy

After reaching the pinnacle of the sport, Eltingh retired from tennis in 1998 at the age of 28. As a testament to his exceptional achievements, he held the world number one ranking in doubles and boasted a career Grand Slam. In 2005, Eltingh joined the ATP Board of Directors as a player representative, further contributing to the development of the sport he loved.
