Jack Albertson was an acclaimed American actor, comedian, and singer, best known for his memorable roles in films such as "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory."

Early Life and Career

Jack Albert was born in Massachusetts to Russian-Jewish immigrants, Flora and Leopold Albertson. He had an older sister, Mabel, who also became an actress. After dropping out of high school, Albertson moved to New York City to pursue a career in show business. He struggled financially and often resorted to sleeping in the subway or Central Park. His first professional gig was as a dancer in a traveling vaudeville troupe.

Later, he found work in a burlesque show where he formed a comedy duo with actor Phil Silvers. These performances led Albertson to Broadway, where his acting career took off. In the late 1930s, he made his film debut, leading to roles in over 30 movies throughout his career.

Film and Television Success

Albertson gained significant recognition in the 1950s as a prolific television actor. In the 1960s and 1970s, he appeared in several successful films, including "Kissin' Cousins" (1964), "The Hired Hand" (1964), "Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory" (1971), and "The Poseidon Adventure" (1972).

In 1964, Albertson won a Tony Award for his role in the Broadway musical "If It Were Not for You," and four years later, he reprised the role in the film adaptation, earning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Simultaneously, he continued his successful television career, winning an Emmy Award in 1974 for his performance in the series "Chico and the Man."

Personal Life and Legacy

In 1978, Albertson was diagnosed with colorectal cancer, but he continued to work actively. One of his last roles was in the horror film "Dead and Buried." Jack Albertson passed away in Hollywood in November 1981 at the age of 74. A year later, his sister, actress Mabel Albertson, passed away. Both were cremated, and their ashes were scattered over the Pacific Ocean.
