Biography of Jack Dodson

John S. Dodson, better known as Jack Dodson, was born in 1931 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. He began his acting career on Broadway, appearing in the original production of 'Hughie' in 1964. It was during this time that he caught the attention of Andy Griffith, who immediately invited him to join his show 'The Andy Griffith Show'. It was this role that made Dodson most memorable to television audiences.

Television and Film Career

In addition to his work on 'The Andy Griffith Show', Dodson played numerous other roles on both television and the big screen. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Dodson could be seen in popular TV series such as 'The Fugitive', 'Peyton Place', 'Hawaii Five-O', 'Room 222', and 'Emergency!'. Dodson's breakout role came in Griffith's spin-off show 'Mayberry R.F.D', which began in 1968. By the time the show ended in 1971, Dodson was already a well-known actor in the industry.

Dodson also appeared in films outside of Griffith's show. In 1969, he and Griffith were cast in the family comedy film 'Angel in My Pocket', directed by Alan Rafkin. Dodson had a supporting role while Griffith played the lead. Other notable film roles include the 1972 action film 'The Getaway', directed by Sam Peckinpah, the 1973 western 'Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid', also directed by Peckinpah, and the 1974 adventure comedy 'Thunderbolt and Lightfoot', directed by Michael Cimino and starring Clint Eastwood.

Later Career and Personal Life

While Dodson enjoyed success in film, his primary focus was on television. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he appeared in a variety of TV shows and films, including 'Police Story', 'Happy Days', 'Welcome Back, Kotter', 'Newhart', and 'St. Elsewhere'. His last film role was in the 1991 drama 'A Climate for Killing', directed by J.S. Cardone. Dodson's final television series was 'Homefront'. He returned to Broadway in 1985 to appear in the production of 'You Can't Take It With You'.

Dodson's filmography includes over 55 television and film credits. He was married to actress Mary Dodson from 1959 until his death. Dodson was known for his active lifestyle, enjoying activities such as fishing and being a fan of boxing. Unfortunately, he passed away at the age of 63 due to heart failure on September 16, 1994, in Los Angeles, California.
