Yakob Kopansky: A Renowned Historian
Early Life and EducationYakob Kopansky was born in Kaushany, Bessarabia, to a family of modest means. He received his early education at a heder before continuing his studies at a Romanian school. During the Great Patriotic War, he and his mother were evacuated to various locations, eventually settling in the Bashkir village of Krasnaya Gorka. After the war, the family returned to Kaushany and later moved to Bendery, where Kopansky completed secondary school.
In 1954, Kopansky graduated from the historical faculty of the Chisinau State University. He subsequently joined the Moldavian branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences (later renamed the Academy of Sciences of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic). There, he held positions as senior researcher and head of the department from 1956 to 1991.
Academic Career
Kopansky's research spanned various aspects of Moldavian history, including contemporary history and Jewish studies. He authored 13 monographs, including contributions to the two-volume "History of Romania" (1971). He also taught at the Chisinau State Pedagogical Institute named after I. Kryange from 1979 to 1989.
Focus on Judaic Studies
From 1992 onwards, Kopansky served as the head of the Department of History and Culture of the Jews of Moldova at the Institute of Interethnic Studies of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. His work in this field included the discovery and publication of archival materials related to the Kishinev pogroms of 1903 and 1905.
Community Involvement and Honors
Kopansky played an active role in the Jewish community in Moldova. He became the chairman of the public council of the Jewish charitable organization "Hessed Yehudah" in 1997. His contributions were recognized with the Order of Gloria Muncii (Glory to Labor) in 2005. Throughout his life, Kopansky remained committed to advancing knowledge and promoting cultural understanding through his extensive research and educational endeavors.
