Jader Barbalho: A Controversial Figure in Brazilian Politics
Background and Early LifeJader Barbalho was born on October 27, 1944, in Belém, Pará. He earned a law degree from the Federal University of Pará (UFPA) in 1971. As a student, he became politically active during the military dictatorship that followed the 1964 coup.
Political Career and Accusations
Barbalho began his political career as a state governor and later served as a senator three times and a minister twice. However, his career was marred by accusations of corruption and misuse of government funds.
SUDAM Scandal
Barbalho was implicated in a financial scandal involving the regional development agency SUDAM, which aimed to improve the Amazon region. After two billion dollars went missing from its funds, President Fernando Henrique Cardoso closed the agency.
2002 Corruption Investigation
In 2002, the opposition sought to establish a parliamentary commission of inquiry (CPI) to investigate allegations of corruption by Barbalho. However, Barbalho used political maneuvers to block the CPI vote.
Impeachment Threat and Resignation
Despite the failure of the CPI, other scandals emerged, renewing pressure on Barbalho. Facing impeachment and bans on political office, he resigned from the Senate on October 4, 2001.
Current Status
Barbalho remains a member of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB) and currently serves as a senator for the state of Pará. He is also a newspaper and television station owner.
