Jaime Barbara King, an American actress and model, was born on April 23, 1979, in Omaha, Nebraska. She is the daughter of former beauty queen Nancy King and Robert King. Her parents divorced in 1994. King attended modeling school before dropping out of Westside Middle School in 1995 to pursue a modeling career in New York City. She later completed a home education program offered by the University of Nebraska.

At the age of 14, King was discovered by beauty agent Michael Flutie at a fashion show at her modeling school. She joined the "Company Management" agency, where she became one of the models alongside Jaime Rishar. To avoid confusion, she was advised to use her childhood nickname - James. By the age of 15, King's photos appeared in magazines such as Vogue, Mademoiselle, Allure, and Seventeen. A year later, her photos graced the pages of Harper's Bazaar and Glamour.
