Early Life and Education

Jacob Becker was born in Germany and is renowned for his contributions as a painter and graphic artist. He was part of the Düsseldorf School of Art. Becker studied in his youth under the artist F. N. Jung in Worms. At the age of 17, he embarked on studying lithography in Frankfurt am Main. During this period, he created his first significant work: a precise depiction of the Rhine panorama between Mainz and Cologne.

Düsseldorf Academy and Artistic Development

From 1833 to 1841, Becker pursued his studies at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art under the guidance of Johann Wilhelm Schirmer and Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow. After his time in Düsseldorf, Becker's artistic pursuits evolved as he shifted from engraving to landscape painting and eventually embraced historical and religious themes. However, he ultimately settled on genre and portraiture as his primary areas of focus. Becker's reputation as a portraitist in Frankfurt am Main was particularly notable.

Professorship and Later Life

In 1842, Becker became a professor of genre and landscape painting at the Städtisches Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt am Main. Notable students under his tutelage include Heinrich Hasselhorst and Wilhelm Berg.

Recognition and Legacy

Becker's work received recognition in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as evidenced by his mention in the "Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary." He passed away on December 22, 1872, in Frankfurt am Main, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the art world.
