Early Life and Family
James Arthur was born in Middlesbrough, England, on March 2, 1988. His mother, Shirley Ashworth, was an English model turned sales and marketing professional, while his father, Neil Arthur, was a Scottish DJ and drummer who also worked as a truck driver. Arthur's parents divorced when he was just one year old, and they both remarried several years later. Although they had been estranged for over 20 years, they reunited to support Arthur at his audition for The X Factor. Arthur has four sisters and one brother.
Education and Move to Bahrain
Arthur initially attended Ings Farm Primary School in Redcar, North Yorkshire. At the age of nine, he relocated to Bahrain with his mother and stepfather, Ronald Rafferty. He enrolled at the British School of Bahrain, where he spent four years.
Return to the UK
When Arthur's mother and stepfather divorced, he returned to the UK at the age of 14 with his mother and three sisters. They settled on Coast Road in Redcar.
Football and Career Before X Factor
Arthur is an avid supporter of his hometown football team, Middlesbrough, as well as Rangers FC. Prior to winning The X Factor, he worked as a barman and waiter in Redcar.
The X Factor
In 2012, Arthur auditioned for the ninth season of the British television talent show The X Factor. He won the competition and became the season's champion.
Return to Bahrain and Studio Opening
Following his X Factor victory, Arthur returned to Bahrain to officially open the James Arthur Music and Drama Studio at the British School of Bahrain. The studio features a rehearsal space and a 400-seat auditorium.
