Brown began his political career in 1983 when he became a member of the British Parliament. From 1987, he held several positions in the shadow cabinet of the Labour Party. He became one of Tony Blair's closest allies and was known for his role in shaping the economic program of the "New Labour" movement. In 1994, Brown, alongside Blair, contested for the party leadership. After the Labour Party's victory in the 1997 elections, Brown assumed the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer. He is credited with implementing key economic reforms that stabilized the British economy during his tenure.

Despite being Blair's ally, Brown was also considered his main rival. One of the major points of disagreement between them was the issue of Britain's entry into the eurozone, with Brown expressing more skepticism compared to the Prime Minister. Within the Labour Party, a significant faction called the "Brownites" formed, some of whom demanded Blair's resignation as early as 2005. By 2006, more than half of Labour voters wished to see Brown as the new Prime Minister. After Blair announced his intention to step down in the summer of 2007, Brown was considered the most likely candidate to succeed him. According to some reports, Blair had promised to make Brown his successor as early as 1994. Brown was officially appointed as Blair's successor on November 16, 2006, and on June 27, 2007, he took office as the Prime Minister.
