Early Life and Family Background
James Baghian was born in Philadelphia in 1952 to Armenian immigrant parents, Philip and Rose. His paternal grandfather, Nazaret Kundepagyan, had emigrated from Arabkir, Armenia, in 1913. His maternal grandmother, Satenig, had immigrated from Malatya, Armenia, in 1908.
Education and Career
Baghian earned a bachelor's degree in engineering from Drexel University in 1974. He subsequently attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and earned an M.D. degree in 1978.
Aviation and Astronaut Career
Baghian began participating in aviation competitions in 1974 and was selected as an astronaut in 1980. He made his first spaceflight as a mission specialist on the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1989. He later participated in the STS-40 mission on the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1991.
Spaceflight Experience
During his two spaceflights, Baghian logged a total of 25 days, 15 hours, and 38 minutes in space. He conducted numerous experiments and helped deploy and repair satellites.
