Early Life and Early Career
Jamie Salé began skating at the age of three. She initially competed as a singles skater, winning the bronze medal at the Canadian Junior Championships. In 1994, she paired with Jason Turner, and the duo earned another bronze at the Canadian Championships and placed 11th at the 1994 Winter Olympics.
Partnership with David Pelletier
In 1998, Salé and David Pelletier joined forces after a failed attempt to skate together two years earlier. Their partnership proved to be successful from the start.
Rise to Success
The pair quickly ascended the ranks, winning the Skate America and Skate Canada events in 1999-2000. They went on to win the Grand Prix Final and the Canadian Championships, and claimed the gold medal at the Four Continents Championships. At the World Championships, they placed fourth despite some errors.
2001-2002 Season: Olympic Triumph
Salé and Pelletier dominated the 2001-2002 season, winning all their competitions, including the Skate America, Skate Canada, Grand Prix Final, and Canadian Championships. For the Olympics, they revised their routines, but ultimately decided to return to their renowned "Love Story" program.
At the 2002 Winter Olympics, they were favored to compete for the gold medal with the Russian pair of Berezhnaya and Sikharulidze. After the short program, they trailed the Russians. In the free skate, they delivered a near flawless performance, but were initially awarded the silver medal, sparking one of the most notorious judging scandals in skating history. A second set of gold medals was awarded to the Canadians, and the scandal led to a complete overhaul of the figure skating judging system.
Professional Career and Personal Life
After their Olympic triumph, Salé and Pelletier turned professional and joined the Stars on Ice show. They married in 2005 and welcomed a son in 2007. However, they filed for divorce in 2010. Salé continues to skate professionally and uses her platform to advocate for social causes.
