Ian Badevsky: A Russian-Language Science Fiction Writer
Early Life and EducationIan Anatolyevich Badevsky was born in 1987 in Polotsk, Belarus. He graduated with a degree in history. In 2012, he relocated to Smolensk, Russia, and has resided in Batumi, Georgia since 2019.
Literary Career
Badevsky began writing in his school years, but his true calling took time to emerge. Prior to becoming a full-time writer, he taught, worked as a tour guide, and contributed to various publications as a correspondent. His extensive travels and analytical mind inspired his interest in futurological research and literature.
Debut and Notable Works
In 2016, Badevsky's debut novel, "Master of Knives," was published by Alfa-Kniga. It launched the "Threshold" series, blending fantasy, techno-magic, and steampunk. "Blades of the Threshold" (2017) was the second novel in the series. Despite being considered by Badevsky as the strongest in the trilogy, "Extreme Gates" was rejected by Alfa-Kniga and eventually published by Ridero in 2017. That same year, "Dark Time of Day" marked the start of his "Multiplicity" series.
Awards and Influences
Badevsky's short story "Pictograms" won first place in four categories in the "MBoys" contest hosted by "Kvazar" in 2017. Among his favorite authors are J.R.R. Tolkien, William Gibson, Clifford Simak, the Strugatsky brothers, and G.L. Oldie.
Personal Life and Philosophy
Badevsky shuns the public literary scene, avoiding seminars and conventions. He maintains no social media accounts and rarely shares personal photos. His words reflect his approach: "... the stereotype of a writer existing solely on paper has faded for me. I thrive in the virtual space. I write what I need to, unbound by publishing constraints."
