Early Life and Education
Born in Mir, Belarus, to a family of teachers, Yanka Zaprudnik grew up in a time of political turmoil. During the Nazi occupation, he completed his studies at the Baranavichy Gymnasium and later attended a trade school in the same city.
World War II and Exile
In 1944, Zaprudnik fled to Germany, where he worked in the mines of Great Britain. After the war, he pursued higher education at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium, graduating in 1954 with a degree in history.
Career in the United States
Zaprudnik immigrated to the United States in 1957. He completed his doctoral dissertation on the political struggle for Belarus in the Russian State Duma at New York University and became a respected professor of history in American universities.
Literary Contributions
Zaprudnik began his literary career in 1947. He served as an editor and contributor to numerous Belarusian émigré publications. Under the pseudonym Sergei Yasen, he published patriotic poems.
