Early Life and Education

Janaya Khanwas born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, to a Trinidadian father and a British Jamaican mother who immigrated to Canada. Khan identifies as Black, queer, and gender-nonconforming. They earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from York University, majoring in English and Literature.

Activism and Founding Black Lives Matter Toronto

In 2014, Khan and Sandy Hudson, a fellow activist, organized a solidarity rally after the shooting death of 33-year-old Jermaine Carby during a traffic stop in Brampton, Ontario. This incident, along with the shooting of Michael Brown in the United States, led Khan to co-found Black Lives Matter Toronto.

Black Lives Matter Toronto has organized numerous protests and events, focusing on cases of police brutality in the United States and Canada. In July 2016, Khan helped organize a sit-in during Toronto Pride, demanding increased representation of marginalized groups and the absence of uniformed police officers at the event.

International Ambassadorship and Black Lives Matter Global Network

Khan's work as a co-founder of Black Lives Matter Toronto played a pivotal role in transforming the movement from a U.S.-based initiative to an international movement. They became the international ambassador for the Black Lives Matter Global Network.

Lectures and Accolades

Khan has lectured extensively across Canada and the United States, including at the University of Toronto, York University, Bryn Mawr College, and Emerson College. They have been the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2015 Bromley Armstrong Human Rights Award from the Toronto and York Region Labour Council. Toronto Life named Khan one of the "Most Influential People in Toronto" in 2016.

Personal Life and Controversy

Khan is married to Patrisse Cullors, co-founder of Black Lives Matter. Khan is a writer and amateur boxer. In 2022, allegations of financial mismanagement within the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation surfaced, with reports indicating that the organization had purchased a mansion using donations. Khan resigned from their role in 2021.
