Jane Barnell, also known as Lady Olga, was a well-known American circus performer with a beard. Her name could often be seen on circus posters in the United States, attracting audiences to witness a woman with a full beard that reached down to her chest. She later became recognized as one of the most successful women with hirsutism, a condition in which women grow hair in a male pattern.

Early Life and Childhood

Jane Barnell was born in 1871 in Wilmington, North Carolina. There are conflicting reports about when her beard first appeared. Some sources claim it began to grow when she was only two years old, while others state it happened when she was four. Regardless, her mother rejected her and sold Jane to the Great Orient Family Circus. Jane's mother believed that her daughter's beard was a curse, and she wanted to rid herself of the cursed child while her husband was away on a business trip to Baltimore.

Circus Life and Personal Challenges

With the circus, Jane traveled to Germany, where she contracted typhoid fever in Berlin. She barely survived and ended up in a German orphanage, where her father eventually found her. He had never come to terms with his wife's actions and had been searching for his daughter. Jane later revealed that she never knew whether her mother sold her for money or simply abandoned her, driven by hatred. Her father, however, was kind to Jane and confronted his wife about her actions.

Jane grew up with a beard that initially unsettled people in her community, but they eventually became accustomed to it. She worked on her grandmother's farm and led a relatively normal life. One day, she met a young man who worked as a strongman in the circus. He convinced her to join the circus as well, using her unique appearance to make money. Jane agreed, and soon she was performing in front of audiences as Lady Olga Roderick in the John Robinson's Circus.

Circus Career and Film Appearances

Lady Olga became a popular attraction in various circuses, including Ringling Brothers, and later worked at Hubert's Museum in New York City. According to some sources, she joined at least 25 different circus troupes throughout her career, earning between $20 and $100 per week. She was known by several names, including Lady Olga, Madame Olga, and Princess Olga, but she never performed under her real name, Jane.

Lady Olga's unique appearance also landed her roles in several films, the most famous being Todd Browning's "Freaks" in 1932. However, Jane later described the film as "offensive." Despite her facial hair, Jane seemed to have no trouble attracting romantic partners. She was married four times and had two children. Her final husband, Thomas O'Boyle, served as her personal manager and was also a circus performer and street barker at Hubert's Dime Museum in New York City.

Later Years and Legacy

Lady Olga passed away from natural causes in 1951 in Los Angeles, California, at an old age. Jane Barnell was later regarded as one of the most successful women with hirsutism, having achieved a long and prosperous career despite her condition.
