Janina Žekaitė is a Lithuanian literary scholar and a habilitated doctor of humanities. She was born in Lithuania and is the mother of politician Andrius Kubilius. In 1951, she graduated from Vilnius University and went on to defend her dissertation on the early works of Antanas Venclova in 1955, earning her a candidate degree in philological sciences.
She worked at the Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore, focusing on Lithuanian literature. Janina Žekaitė has authored several works, including writings on the pre-revolutionary works of Antanas Venclova (1957), the works of A. P. Chekhov and Lithuanian short stories (1969), the development of the novel genre in pre-war Lithuanian literature (1970), and the emergence of impressionism and expressionism in Lithuanian prose (1977).
In addition to her own publications, she has also prepared editions of letters by Šatrijos Ragana (1986), writings by Jurgis Savickis (Volumes 1-6, 1990-1999), and a collection of memoirs and documents about him (2000).
Janina Žekaitė's research interests are centered around Lithuanian literature. She has written monographs on writers such as Šatrijos Ragana (1984), Julius Janonis (1991), as well as Jurgis Savickis (1994) and Ignas Šeinus (1999).
