Janusz Kaleta: A Life in the Catholic Church

Early Life and Education

Janusz Kaleta was born in Bobowa, Poland. He completed his general education at the lyceum in Bobowa before entering the Seminary in Tarnow in 1983. In 1989, he was ordained a priest by Jerzy Karol Ablewicz, Bishop of Tarnow.

Ministerial Work in Poland

From 1989 to 1993, Father Kaleta served in the parish of Nowy Wisnicz while concurrently pursuing his studies at the Pontifical Theological Academy in Krakow, where he earned a licentiate. He continued his education at the Faculty of Theology at the University of Innsbruck, where he obtained a doctorate in moral theology in 1997.

Upon his return to Poland, Father Kaleta became a parish priest at St. Nicholas in Bochnia and taught bioethics at the Pontifical Theological Academy in Krakow.

Bishop of Kazakhstan

On July 7, 1999, Father Kaleta was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Atyrau in Kazakhstan. On May 6, 2003, he received the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness. On September 15, 2006, he was appointed Titular Bishop of Felbes. Bishop Kaleta was consecrated on November 23, 2006, by Cardinal Angelo Sodano.

On February 5, 2011, Bishop Kaleta was appointed Bishop of Karaganda. He also continued to hold the office of Apostolic Administrator of Atyrau. On December 7, 2012, he relinquished the latter position to Bishop Adelio del Oro.

Bishop of Karaganda

As Bishop of Karaganda, Kaleta oversaw a large diocese covering most of central Kazakhstan. He focused on pastoral care, establishing a new parish in Karaganda and supporting the existing Catholic communities in the region.

Retirement and Controversy

On July 15, 2014, Pope Francis accepted Bishop Kaleta's resignation from the Diocese of Karaganda. On June 28, 2016, Kaleta publicly revealed that Pope Francis had returned him to the lay state as of May 30, 2016. Kaleta admitted to having a long-term relationship with a woman, which he had kept secret.
