Early Career and Collaboration with Kevin Smith

Mewes met Kevin Smith during their school years in Highlands, where they both grew up. Mewes worked in a supermarket, while Smith worked in a video store across the street. It was in that video store that the script for "Clerks" was born, with the role of Jay initially written specifically for Mewes. Without even reading the script, Mewes agreed to play the role and delivered a brilliant performance, completely embodying the character. Despite this success, Mewes was unaware of the film's popularity and continued working as a roofer until he received another invitation from Kevin Smith to act in his films.
