Javier Jáuregui: Mexican Boxing Champion
Early Life and CareerJavier Rogelio Jáuregui Delgado was born on September 5, 1973, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. He began his professional boxing career at the age of 14. Throughout his career, he experienced both victories and defeats. Notably, he defeated future two-time lightweight world champion Jose Luis Castillo twice in technical knockouts in 1994 and 1996.
IBF Lightweight Champion
In 2003, Jáuregui achieved the pinnacle of his career by winning the vacant IBF lightweight title against Leavander Johnson via technical knockout. However, his reign as champion was short-lived, as he lost his title to Julio Díaz in his first defense.
Later Career
Despite his loss, Jáuregui remained a formidable opponent. He became a respected gatekeeper, a challenge for young and promising boxers. He fought against a range of notable boxers, including Ruslan Provodnikov, who defeated him in a technical knockout in 2010.
Retirement and Return
Following his defeat to Provodnikov, Jáuregui announced his retirement from boxing and joined the team of fellow Mexican fighter Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez. In January 2013, he made a brief return to the ring, defeating Fernando Ayala via technical knockout.
Death
On December 11, 2013, Javier Jáuregui passed away at the age of 41 in a Guadalajara hospital. The exact circumstances of his death remain unclear. Some sources report that he suffered a stroke on December 10, while others indicate that he underwent a complex surgery on December 9. It has been speculated that his brain failure was either a result of the surgery or an underlying condition.
