Early Life and Education
Jay Penske was born in New York City to renowned auto racing and automotive entrepreneur Roger Penske. Growing up, Jay attended Cranbrook Schools, Lawrenceville School, and the private Catholic boarding school St. Mary's Preparatory in Michigan. At St. Mary's, he excelled in lacrosse and hockey, earning numerous accolades, including "Player of the Year" by USA Today in lacrosse.
Business Ventures
PMC Media and Digital:Jay Penske is the founder, chairman, and CEO of PMC Media and Digital (PMC), a leading digital media and publishing company. PMC owns and operates numerous websites, including Deadline.com, MovieLine.com, OnCars.com, HollywoodLife.com, Fan.com, TVline.com, BGR.com, and MailTimes.
Mail.com:
Penske founded and served as CEO of Mail.com, an email service that was later acquired by PMC and subsequently sold to German media company United Internet in 2010.
Firefly Mobile:
He was also a co-founder and chairman of Firefly Mobile, Inc., a wireless communications company that developed Firefly-branded children's mobile phones and other youth-oriented mobile products.
Dragon Books:
Additionally, Penske owns Dragon Books, Ltd., a rare and collectible bookstore located in Los Angeles.
Racing and Philanthropy
Dragon Racing:Jay Penske is an avid motorsports enthusiast. He owned a race team in partnership with Steve Luczo, chairman, president, and CEO of Seagate Technologies. The team, Luczo Dragon Racing, made its debut in 2009. In 2011, Penske became the sole owner of the team, renaming it Dragon Racing.
Quill Awards:
Penske supports the Quill Awards, a charitable organization that recognizes outstanding writing. He serves on its executive board. In 2007, Luczo Dragon Racing donated $250,000 from its Indianapolis 500 earnings to charitable and non-profit organizations founded by prominent athletes and celebrities.
Recognition and Honors
In 2009, Vanity Fair named Jay Penske to its "New Establishment" list. The following year, the magazine recognized him as one of the "10 Best-Dressed Men in the World."
