Biography of Jean-Baptiste Joseph Fourier

Early Life and Education

Jean-Baptiste Joseph Fourier was born in a tailor's family. At the age of 9, he lost both of his parents and became an orphan. He was placed in a Military School at a Benedictine monastery. In 1789, he traveled to Paris to present his work on the numerical solution of equations of any degree, but it got lost during the revolution. Fourier returned to Oser and started teaching at the same school he had attended. In 1794, he enrolled in the Normal School, established by the Convention to train teachers. Although the school was soon closed, Fourier managed to catch the attention of prominent scientists such as Lagrange, Laplace, and Monge. From 1795 to 1798, he taught at the Polytechnic School.

Scientific Career and Contributions

Fourier participated in Napoleon's Egyptian campaign along with other scientists. He served as the secretary of the Cairo Institute established by Napoleon. After England's victory, in 1802, Fourier was appointed the prefect of the Isère department with his headquarters in Grenoble. There, he continued his scientific research in algebra and actively worked in the emerging field of heat theory. In 1808, Fourier received the title of baron and was awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor. Following Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo and the end of the "Hundred Days", he was removed from his position and moved to Paris. He worked as the director of the Statistical Bureau, where he utilized his experience gained in Egypt to elevate the field. In 1816, the Paris Academy of Sciences elected him as a member, but King Louis XVIII canceled the appointment. However, in the same year, he was reelected as a member, and this time the election was confirmed. Fourier became one of the most influential academicians, and in 1822, he was chosen as the lifelong secretary of the Academy. In the same year, he published "Théorie analytique de la chaleur" (Analytical Theory of Heat). Fourier passed away on May 16, 1830, in Paris.

Contributions to Mathematics and Physics

Fourier proved the theorem on the number of real roots of an algebraic equation lying between given limits, now known as Fourier's theorem (1796). He independently explored the conditions for the applicability of Isaac Newton's method for numerical solutions of equations, a question also investigated by Jean-Marie Duhamel (1818). Fourier's monograph "Analytical Theory of Heat" derived the heat conduction equation in solid bodies and developed methods for its integration under various boundary conditions. Fourier's method involved representing functions as trigonometric series (Fourier series). He discovered a formula for representing a function using an integral, which plays a significant role in modern mathematics. Fourier also proved that any arbitrarily drawn curve composed of segments of different curves can be represented by a single analytical expression.

Discovery of the Thermoelectric Effect

In 1823, Fourier independently discovered the thermoelectric effect, which was also independently found by Thomas Johann Seebeck. He demonstrated that the effect has the property of superposition and created a thermoelectric element.
