Biography of Jean Driscoll

Jean Driscoll is an American athlete and wheelchair racer. Despite being born with a congenital spinal cord injury, she competes in races ranging from 1.5 kilometers to the marathon distance. With over a dozen Paralympic medals and seven consecutive victories at the Boston Marathon, Driscoll is considered one of the best wheelchair racers in the world.

Early Years

Jean Driscoll spent her childhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where her congenital spinal cord defect left a noticeable impact. In her later years of school, Driscoll started using a wheelchair and became involved in wheelchair sports. She competed in track and field events for wheelchair athletes on behalf of her school and played wheelchair basketball for the University of Illinois.

Paralympic Success

In 1988, Jean Driscoll made her debut at the Paralympic Games. She won bronze medals in the 200-meter and 400-meter races, silver in the 4x100 relay, and gold in the 4x200 relay. Her first significant individual victory came in 1989 when she won the 12-kilometer Lilac Bloomsday race in Spokane, Washington. One of her toughest competitors, Candace Cable, motivated Driscoll to compete in marathons. In the same year, she participated in the Chicago Marathon, which earned her the qualification to compete in the Boston Marathon.

Domination at the Boston Marathon

Initially, Driscoll was not interested in marathon distances, but her impressive performance in the Boston Marathon changed her perspective. She went on to win the Boston Marathon seven times in a row, setting a world record in 1991 with a time of 1:42:42. Despite facing challenges such as illness and strong competition, particularly from Louise Sauvage of Australia, Driscoll continued to excel. However, in her eighth attempt in 1997, she faced a mishap when her wheelchair got stuck in trolley tracks, and she could not recover the lost time. Sauvage emerged as the winner, defeating Driscoll again in 1998 and 1999. In 2000, Driscoll won her eighth and final Boston Marathon.

Paralympic Achievements

In addition to her success at the Boston Marathon, Jean Driscoll competed in multiple Paralympic Games. In 1992, she won a gold medal in the 4x100-meter relay. She also participated in the races of 800 meters, 1500 meters, and 5000 meters but did not achieve much success. In the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics, Driscoll won medals in four different events, including gold in the 10,000 meters and the marathon, silver in the 5000 meters, and bronze in the 1500 meters. At the 2000 Sydney Paralympics, she won gold in the marathon, silver in the 1500 meters, and bronze in the 5000 meters.
