The Life of Saint Jean-Louis Bonnard

Jean-Louis Bonnard was a priest, missionary, and martyr of the Roman Catholic Church. After pursuing a university education, he entered the Seminary of Lyons.

Seminary and Ordination

In 1846, at the age of 22, Bonnard completed his theological studies at the seminary of the Paris Foreign Missions Society in Paris. He was ordained a priest in 1847.

Mission in Vietnam

In May 1850, Bonnard traveled to Northern Vietnam as part of a Catholic mission. He preached Christianity and established a church in present-day Hanoi.

Arrest and Martyrdom

On March 21, 1852, Bonnard was arrested and imprisoned by the Vietnamese authorities. Despite torture, he refused to renounce his faith. On May 1, 1852, he was executed by beheading. His body was thrown into a river, but local Christians retrieved it and sent it to the seminary of the Foreign Missions in Paris.

Sainthood and Legacy

On June 19, 1988, Pope John Paul II declared Jean-Louis Bonnard a saint of the Roman Catholic Church. In Saigon, a major boulevard was named Bonnard Boulevard, which was later renamed Le Loi Boulevard. Bonnard's legacy continues to inspire Catholics in Vietnam and around the world.
