Biography of Jean-Michel Cousteau
Jean-Michel Cousteau, the eldest son of legendary commander Cousteau, was born in the French city of Toulon in 1938. He is a certified specialist from the Paris School of Architecture and a member of the National Council of Architecture of France. He participated in the design of floating islands in the area of Madagascar. After the death of his younger brother Philippe, he left his profession and decided, like his father, to devote his life to the study of the ocean.
Early Life and Career
Jean-Michel Cousteau's fascination with the underwater world began at a young age. He remembers his first visit to the depths of the Mediterranean Sea at the age of seven, on a pointed boat belonging to a Toulon fisherman. He spent his weekends after the war exploring the seas in an autonomous diving suit, much like others learn to ride horses or play tennis.
His father, while still a captain in the French Navy, had already started building his legend by restoring the military ship "Calypso". The Cousteau family spent their vacations wherever the "Calypso" dropped anchor, in the Red Sea, the Pacific Ocean, or any other location. This became their normalcy.
Jean-Michel's mother, Simone Cousteau, was the glue that held the large "Calypso" family together. Jean-Michel always speaks of his mother with reverence, remembering her strength and calmness in all circumstances, even as she battled a terminal illness.
Becoming an architect, Jean-Michel pursued his dream of building homes and even cities at great depths. He received his degree from the Paris School of Architecture and completed an internship at the shipyards of Saint-Nazaire, working on the architect of the "France" ocean liner. He inherited his father's blue eyes, the color of the lagoon where diving is so effortless, and his persistence in developing his ideas.
Environmental Activism
Jean-Michel Cousteau has always been a passionate advocate for the environment. He taught ecology at two American universities and propagated ecological knowledge throughout the United States. His lectures resembled sermons, as he believed that ecology should have nothing to do with politics and should be focused on the well-being of all humanity. He stated that the oceans are currently in danger due to human exploitation and called for their protection.
Today, Jean-Michel Cousteau travels the world giving lectures on the issues facing the World's oceans. He is the president of the Ocean Futures Society, an organization dedicated to protecting and exploring the ocean.
