Jędrzej Kitowicz: Polish Historian and Memoirist

Early Life and Education

Jędrzej Kitowicz, a Polish historian and memoirist, was imprisoned in Bar Confederation camps during his early life. In 1771, he enrolled in the Warsaw Theological Seminary and was ordained as a priest around 1777.

Priesthood and Writing

Kitowicz became the rector of a parish in Rzeczyca, where he spent the rest of his life. His experiences and keen observation led him to become a prominent chronicler of his time. He documented his insights in numerous letters and memoirs.

Historical Writings

Kitowicz's unfinished works, based on earlier notes, provide valuable historical sources for the 18th century. His first publication, "Opis obyczajów i zwyczajów za panowania Augusta III" (Description of Customs and Habits during the Reign of August III), published in 1841 and 1855, delves into the societal norms of the era.

His second major work, "Pamiętniki do panowania Stanisława Poniatowskiego" (Memoirs of the Reign of Stanisław Poniatowski), published in 1845, chronicled the events and personalities during the reign of the last Polish king.

Legacy

Kitowicz's keen observations and prolific writings have made him one of the most insightful observers of 18th-century Poland. His works provide valuable insights into the social, political, and cultural landscape of his time.
