Jeff Porcaro: Virtuoso Drummer, Composer, and Producer

Early Life and Music Education

Jeffery Thomas Porcaro was born on April 1, 1954, in Hartford, Connecticut. As the eldest son of jazz drummer Joseph Porcaro, Jeff began playing drums at a young age under his father's guidance. By 17, he had secured his first touring gig with Sonny and Cher.

Career as a Session Drummer

By his early 20s, Porcaro had already amassed a vast studio experience, having played on over a hundred album recordings, including several for Steely Dan and Boz Scaggs. His iconic drumming on Steely Dan's "Katy Lied" album catapulted him to prominence in the early 1970s.

Formation of Toto

In 1977, Porcaro co-founded the rock group Toto alongside his friends and fellow musicians from the Boz Scaggs band. Toto became one of the most successful bands of the 1980s, with Porcaro's drumming style shaping their signature sound.

"Rosanna Shuffle"

Porcaro's drumming on Toto's hit single "Rosanna" featured an innovative pattern known as the "Rosanna shuffle." Inspired by Led Zeppelin's "Fool in the Rain," the shuffle became a groundbreaking groove and earned him a Grammy Award.

Legacy and Impact

Throughout his career, Porcaro's versatility, talent, and unwavering work ethic made him one of the most sought-after session musicians in Hollywood. His drumming revolutionized the sound of popular music and left an indelible mark on the industry.

Tragic Passing

On August 5, 1992, Porcaro was rushed to the hospital in a coma after suffering a cardiac arrest. Doctors initially attributed his death to an allergic reaction to pesticides he was using on his lawn. However, subsequent reports revealed that cocaine use had contributed to the cardiac event.

Equipment and Endorsements

Jeff Porcaro was a renowned endorser of Pearl drums, Paiste cymbals, and Remo drumheads. His signature Regaltip "Jeff Porcaro" drumsticks remain widely used by drummers today.
