The Duchy of Vasconia

In 587, the Vascons, a Basque people, seized territories in the Adour and Garonne river valleys. However, in 602, the Austrasian king Theodebert II and the Burgundian king Theoderic II defeated the Vascons and established the Duchy of Vasconia to govern the area.

Genial: The First Duke

Genial, the first Duke of Vasconia, was appointed around 602. He is believed to have been of Frankish or Gallo-Roman origin, but little is known about his rule.

The territory under Genial's control initially consisted of the Garonne valley, while the Adour valley remained under Vascon control. The Dukes of Vasconia were nominally subordinate to the Dukes of Toulouse.

Vascon Rebellions and Visigothic Interventions

During the early decades of Vasconic rule, the Vascons frequently revolted against Frankish authority. In 610 and 612, the Visigothic kings Gundemar and Sisebut launched campaigns against the Vascons.

In 621, after a Vascon raid on the Ebro valley, the Visigothic king Swinthila defeated them and forced them to construct a town or fortress named Ologiticum, which was garrisoned by Visigoths.
