J. J. A. Worsaae: The Pioneer of Danish Archaeology
Early Life and EducationJørgen Jørgensen Worsaae was born into a prominent Danish family in Copenhagen in 1821. Initially pursuing a legal career, he shifted his focus to archaeology after his father's passing. He became a pupil of Christian J. Thomsen, the renowned archaeologist.
Appointment as Inspector of Antiquities
In 1848, King Frederick VII appointed Worsaae as the Inspector of Antiquities, recognizing his groundbreaking research in pre-history. This position made him the first archaeologist to receive a salary for his work.
Contributions to Archaeology
Worsaae played a pivotal role in the development of Danish archaeology. He expanded on Thomsen's "Three-Age System," dividing the Stone Age into the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods. Through his meticulous studies of shell middens and archaeological sites, he demonstrated that megalithic tombs were not religious structures but burial mounds.
Member of Prestigious Academies
Worsaae's contributions earned him recognition from prestigious institutions. He was elected a corresponding member of the Berlin Society for Anthropology, Ethnology, and Prehistory and the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences.

Introduction of the Viking Age
