The Outdoor Adventurer Who Faced Heart Failure
Jeremy White, a 35-year-old avid outdoorsman and survival instructor from Spokane, Washington, thought he was in perfect health until he underwent a routine knee surgery in June 2015. The procedure revealed that Jeremy had a terminal heart condition known as congestive heart failure.
From Summits to Hospital Beds
Prior to his diagnosis, Jeremy had summited some of America's tallest mountains, including Mount Rainier and Mount Whitney. He had also gone scuba diving in Hawaii and swam with sharks. However, the knee surgery triggered chest pain and shortness of breath, leading to his life-altering diagnosis.
Embracing the Unexpected
Jeremy's doctors determined that a virus had likely damaged his heart months before the surgery. His excellent physical condition had masked his weakening heart until the stress of the operation caused his body to collapse. With no donor heart available, Jeremy underwent a life-saving procedure to implant a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD).
Surviving with a Technological Heart
The LVAD, implanted surgically below Jeremy's heart, pumps blood from his left ventricle to his aorta, ensuring that his body receives oxygenated blood. An external controller, battery pack, and backup battery are carried outside the body. After a grueling 9-hour surgery, Jeremy began his recovery.
Adjusting to a Changed Reality
Life after the LVAD implantation was a drastic departure from Jeremy's former adventures. He traded mountain climbs for shortness of breath upon climbing stairs. He now carries a backpack filled with batteries that power his artificial heart and must take blood thinners to prevent clots. The physical and emotional challenges led to a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder.
Finding Hope in Adversity
Despite the setbacks, Jeremy remains positive and focuses on what he can still do. He emphasizes the importance of finding purpose and meaning beyond oneself to cope with adversity. "You can't change the fact that bad things happen," he says. "But you can change how you respond to them."
