Biography of Jerry Brudos

Jerry Brudos, an American serial killer, was diagnosed with schizophrenia, and his troubled mind was filled with thoughts of revenge, blaming his mother, blaming women in general, and twisted sexual fantasies.

Early Life and Childhood

Jerome Henry 'Jerry' Brudos was born in 1939 in Webster, South Dakota, and he was the youngest of four sons in his family. It is known that his mother, who had hoped for a daughter, dressed Jerry in girls' clothing during his childhood, but she was not particularly affectionate towards him. The family moved several times to different places on the Pacific Northwest coast. At some point, it became evident that Jerry had some deviations in his sexual preferences - he had an undeniable fetish for women's shoes and was also interested in women's lingerie, which he would steal. As a teenager, he underwent psychiatric treatment a couple of times.

Early Criminal Behavior

At the age of 17, Jerry threatened a girl with a knife and forced her to pose naked for him in front of a camera. He was subsequently convicted and sent to the Oregon State Hospital for mandatory treatment. He was released from the hospital after nine months. Despite his diagnosis of schizophrenia and his disturbing thoughts, Jerry was able to graduate from high school in 1957. He started working as an electrician and got married in 1961. His wife was considerably younger, only 17 years old at the time of their wedding. It is known that Jerry later enjoyed photographing his wife naked, wearing only high-heeled shoes, while he took the pictures. However, this was not a crime, and Jerry Brudos committed his heinous crimes later, in 1968 and 1969.

Serial Killings

Jerry Brudos' victims were four young women. Linda Slawson, a door-to-door book saleswoman, disappeared after offering her merchandise - encyclopedias - to Jerry when he opened the door. He dragged her into his basement, beat her with a stick, and strangled her. Later investigations revealed that he had also sexually assaulted her after death, dressed her in his own clothes, and even severed her leg.

Karen Sprinker, a 23-year-old woman, encountered the maniac on the road when her car broke down. Jerry tortured her body, which was suspended on a hook, for several days before disposing of it. It is worth noting that in all cases, Brudos displayed a necrophiliac inclination. The same fate awaited Jan Whitney and Linda Salee, who became his last victims. However, there were also cases where his attempts were unsuccessful, as the survivors provided police with descriptions of Brudos.

Arrest and Death

After two years of brutality, Jerry Brudos was arrested. He confessed to all four murders, was found guilty, and sentenced to life imprisonment. He died in prison on March 28, 2008, from liver cancer, which was deemed a natural cause of death. At the time of his death, Brudos had served an exceptionally long sentence in the state of Oregon.

Interestingly, studying Brudos' case, experts concluded that if he had married a normal girl instead of a partner inclined towards masochism, Jerry Brudos might never have committed his horrific crimes.
