Unusual appearance can either make someone famous or ruin their life, especially during childhood when being different can lead to relentless bullying. In such cases, proper upbringing and maximum support from parents become crucial. Lisa and Jim Needham are doing everything they can to help their children, and the two young albinos, Jessica and Ben, feel completely comfortable in the ordinary world, hardly suffering from their appearance.

Lisa Needham, 43, and her 50-year-old husband Jim have three children. Their eldest, 14-year-old Matthew, doesn't stand out from his peers in any way. However, 11-year-old Jessica and 7-year-old Ben look much more unusual. It turned out that recessive genes from their parents coincided, resulting in Jessica and Ben being born as albinos. Lisa learned about her daughter's condition four weeks after she was discharged from the hospital. The news was shocking for the Needhams as they never suspected they were carriers of the albino gene. Their eldest son did not inherit the gene, and there were no albinos among other members of the Needham family.

Acceptance and Support

Initially, the Needhams panicked at the uniqueness of their children. However, Lisa and Jim quickly realized that their unique appearance did not affect their feelings towards their children. The Needhams regularly remind Ben and Jessica that they love them just as much as their older brother. The children have seamlessly integrated into society, despite occasionally being stared at due to their unusual appearance. This does not hinder Ben from actively participating in sports or Jessica from performing in amateur theater. Unfortunately, their distinctive appearance is not the only challenge they face; their genes have also affected their vision. Jessica, in particular, has poor eyesight, especially in bright light, and is required to wear glasses outdoors. However, she has adapted to her condition and has learned to handle the related issues.

Jessica's Aspirations

Jessica is not surprised by the reactions of new acquaintances. She is well aware that she looks different, and she has mastered the skill of quickly explaining her condition to others and teaching them to accept her unique appearance. Being able to communicate with people is essential for Jessica, as she currently performs on stage and dreams of becoming a singer in the future. In addition to her theater involvement, Jessica has hobbies unrelated to the stage, making her no different from her ordinary peers in most aspects.

Welcoming a Third Child

Realizing that their albino daughter was not facing any major difficulties due to her condition, Lisa and Jim decided to have a third child. They were well aware that there was a chance of having another albino child, but they were not afraid. The likelihood of giving birth to one albino child for a randomly selected couple is approximately 1 in 17,000, and the chances of having two albino children in a row may seem negligible, but it is still nonzero. Ben Needham came into the world through a cesarean section, and his characteristic white hair immediately confirmed the concern of doctors and parents. Like his older sister, Ben has adapted well to his condition, actively participating in swimming and aspiring to compete in the Paralympic Games in the future. However, Lisa and Jim are currently more concerned about Jessica's imminent transition from childhood to adolescence, which is guaranteed to bring about a change in her values and potentially more challenges related to her unusual appearance. Similar difficulties have already arisen in the past, such as when Jessica had to wear full coverage clothing instead of a regular swimsuit during their vacation in Majorca. Nevertheless, her parents are ready to support her in all her endeavors and help her overcome any difficulties she may face.
