Early Life and Education

Dževad Karahasan was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He studied at the University of Sarajevo and later earned his doctorate in the work of Miroslav Krleža from the University of Zagreb.

Career

Following his studies, Karahasan taught dramaturgy at the University of Sarajevo. In 1993, he was forced to leave his home city due to the Bosnian War and relocated to Salzburg, Austria.

Since 1995, Karahasan has been associated with the Austrian music and theater society ARBOS. His plays have been performed in theaters across Europe, including Austria, Germany, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, the United States, Singapore, and others. His books have been translated into numerous European languages.

Awards and Recognition

Karahasan has received numerous awards for his work, including the Charles Veillon Essay Prize (1994), the Bruno Kreisky Prize for Political Literature (1995), the Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding (2004), and the Vilenica Prize (2010).
