The Long-Term Risk of Lip Fillers

In 2001, Gillian Paris, then a 29-year-old resident of Merseyside, underwent eyelid surgery and received permanent lip fillers in an effort to boost her confidence. The procedures cost a combined £5,500 and initially left Paris thrilled with the results. She felt years younger and received compliments on her fuller lips.

A Sudden Reaction

However, in the summer of 2022, Paris woke up to find her lips swollen and painful to the touch. She initially dismissed it as a reaction to the warm climate, but the symptoms persisted. Upon returning to the UK, her lips began to take on the appearance of "trout pout," covered in gelatinous lumps.

Immune System Attack

Medical tests revealed that Paris's body was rejecting the filler, a product called Artecoll, which contained tiny Plexiglas beads suspended in collagen. Her immune system had begun to attack the filler, causing the Plexiglas to break through her skin.

Painful Surgery

After months of steroid injections to alleviate the pain, Paris underwent emergency surgery to remove the collagen. The three-hour procedure, performed under general anesthesia, removed the majority of the filler, but remnants still remain within her lips.

Long-Term Complications

Paris is now left with numbness in the corners of her mouth, which causes her to drool and affects her ability to eat and speak. She advises others against using permanent fillers, stating that the long-term safety of such products should be more thoroughly tested.

Company Response

A spokesperson for European Medical Contract Manufacturing (EMCM), the company that produced Artecoll, defended the product's safety, stating that it undergoes rigorous testing and comes with comprehensive instructions for proper use and potential side effects.
