Early Life and Career
Jim Bakkum, a Dutch singer-actor, began his journey to stardom as a teenager over two decades ago. Born on August 10, 1987, in Egmond-Binnen, Netherlands, Bakkum grew up with an older brother named Danny. Encouraged by their parents' support for the arts, the brothers formed a quartet called The Kids and performed covers and their own songs from a young age. Bakkum also joined a theater company, acted in musicals, and was a member of the jury for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest.
In 2002, Bakkum auditioned for the talent show Idols with Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely?" becoming the youngest contestant at only 15 years old. He finished as the runner-up, earning a record deal. The sudden surge of popularity forced him to leave school. Bakkum's debut single, "Tell Her," was released in spring 2003 and became a platinum hit. Soon after his 16th birthday, he released his gold-certified debut album, Impressed, performed a sold-out concert, and made his acting debut in an episode of the detective series Baantjer.
Music and Television Success
Bakkum's sophomore album, Ready, was released in May 2004 but did not achieve the same success as his debut. He began actively appearing in television shows the following year, including Dancing with the Stars. Bakkum won the competition with partner Julie Fryer and released his gold-certified album Dance With Me. In summer 2006, the Dutch association of choreographers awarded Bakkum for his music being played in dance classes more than any other artist during the season.
Acting Career and Other Projects
Meanwhile, Bakkum focused on his acting career. He starred in films and television series, toured the Netherlands in the musical Grease, voiced a character in the Dutch version of the animated film Asterix and the Vikings, and released the soundtrack "Dapper En Sterk." In spring 2007, he became the host of the television show The Road to Fame, where he cast participants for the musical Fame. Bakkum also launched his own clothing line, embarked on a solo theater tour, and released his fourth studio album, Vrij.
Bakkum expanded his repertoire to modeling. He appeared in commercials for hair care and skincare products, walked the runway for Italian designer Frankie Morello, and released his fifth album, NU. He starred in Hairspray, added film roles to his portfolio, and hosted Show News and a youth charity project in 2012, taking a step back from music. He also appeared in the comedy film Love & Sex on Ibiza and its television series adaptation.
Recent Projects and Personal Life
In September 2016, Bakkum became the face and voice of Fox. In February 2017, he hosted The Band, a talent show that auditioned members for a new Dutch boy band. The show received low ratings, and Bakkum left the channel.
During this period, Bakkum turned author and released a children's book, Dadoe, with singer Kirsten Michel. In 2021, he published his autobiography, Jim, De Weg Naar Bakkum, recounting his experience as a 15-year-old boy whose life was turned upside down by Idols.
Bakkum has preferred to date within the entertainment industry. He had a relationship with fellow Idols participant Charlotte Hogeslag in 2003. He later met actress Gaby Blaaser, with whom he was involved for over three years.
While working on Grease, Bakkum met singer, actress, and dancer Bettina Holwerda. They were injured in a 2007 accident when a prop car fell into an orchestra pit. Bakkum sustained a concussion while Holwerda broke her wrist. During their hospital stay, they formed a friendship that later blossomed into romance. Despite their eight-year age difference, Bakkum married Holwerda in 2011 in Amsterdam. They welcomed their first child, Lux, the following year, and went on to have two more daughters, Posy in 2015 and Molly in 2019. The family resides in a historical mansion in Naarden, Netherlands.
Bakkum's latest success is the 2020 comedy film Super Mike, a sequel to Our Boys (2016). He plays a charismatic stripper who dreams of opening his own club in Miami. Bakkum underwent extensive training for the role to achieve the necessary physique. The film premiered in the Netherlands in early 2020 and internationally later in the year.
