Jim Hightower: From Laborer to Leading Liberal
Born in Denison, Texas, Jim Hightower comes from humble beginnings, having worked on a farm during his youth. He graduated from the University of North Texas and later pursued graduate studies in international affairs at Columbia University.
Political Activism in Washington, D.C.
In the late 1960s, Hightower moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked as a legislative assistant to Senator Ralph Yarborough. He co-founded the Agribusiness Accountability Project, which resulted in the publication of his first two books.
Texas Commissioner of Agriculture
In 1982, Hightower was elected Commissioner of Agriculture in Texas, where he implemented reforms that supported organic farming, alternative agriculture, and strict natural resource policies. He gained national prominence as a Democrat and endorsed Jesse Jackson for president in 1988.
Controversies and Criticisms
Three of Hightower's aides were convicted of bribery related to campaign donations. This scandal contributed to his defeat in the 1990 commissioner's race by Rick Perry. Hightower became a vocal critic of President Clinton, opposing his corporate welfare policies and support for NAFTA.
Progressive Advocacy
Hightower co-chaired Ralph Nader's 2000 presidential campaign and campaigned for outsider candidates Dennis Kucinich and John Kerry in subsequent elections. He has also advocated for industrial hemp and progressive initiatives.
Hightower Radio and Media Influence
Since 1993, Hightower has hosted "Hightower Radio," a daily political commentary broadcast on over 130 affiliates. He has also hosted talk shows on American Broadcasting Company and United Broadcasting Network. His "Chit & Chat" program features Floyd Domino as music director and Susan DeMarco as co-host.
Support for Bernie Sanders and Progressive Activism
Hightower endorsed Bernie Sanders for president in 2016 and campaigned actively for the Democratic candidate. He joined the board of the progressive group "Our Revolution" and expressed optimism for ongoing progressive movements despite electoral setbacks.
