Early Life and Education

Joanne Kate Swinson was born on February 5, 1980, in Glasgow, Scotland, to Peter and Annette Swinson. Her father was diagnosed with leukemia in 2008 and passed away in 2018. Swinson attended Douglas Academy and the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Political Career

Liberal Democrat Roots:Swinson joined the Liberal Democrats at the age of 17. In 2001, she became the Liberal Democrat candidate for East Kingston upon Hull in the general election, but lost to Labour's John Prescott. In 2003, she unsuccessfully ran for election to the Scottish Parliament.

Member of Parliament:In 2005, Swinson was elected to the UK Parliament for East Dunbartonshire, becoming the first Liberal Democrat MP for the constituency and the youngest MP in the House. She held the unofficial title of "Baby of the House" until 2009. Swinson initiated a bill in 2007 to reduce packaging waste, which received positive responses from companies like Nestle and Cadbury.

Government Roles:In 2012, Swinson was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg. She served in this capacity until 2015.

Election Victories and Defeats

2015 and 2017 Elections:Swinson lost her East Dunbartonshire seat in the 2015 election. However, she regained it in the 2017 election, defeating the Scottish National Party's John Nicolson.

Leadership of the Liberal Democrats

Election as Leader:On July 22, 2019, Swinson was elected leader of the Liberal Democrats, becoming the first woman to hold the position.

2019 General Election:The December 12, 2019, snap general election resulted in another defeat for Swinson in her East Dunbartonshire constituency. She resigned as party leader on December 13.

Personal Life

Swinson married politician Duncan Hames on May 13, 2011. They have two sons, Andrew Lennox Marshall Hames (born December 22, 2013) and Gabriel Hames (born June 29, 2018).
