Teófilo Braga
Teófilo Braga was a prolific Portuguese writer, poet, playwright, scholar, and politician. Born in 1843, he published his first collection of poetry, "Folhas Verdes" ("Green Leaves"), in 1864.
Early Career
After obtaining a law degree from the University of Coimbra, Braga moved to Lisbon in 1872 to pursue a literary career. He published numerous collections of poetry, as well as ethnological (studies of folk songs) and philosophical literature.
Political Involvement
In 1878, Braga was elected to the Portuguese Parliament, where he aligned himself with the republican-federalists. In 1890, he joined the Portuguese Republican Party and became a member of its Political Directorate.
Role in the First Portuguese Republic
After the overthrow of the monarchy on October 5, 1910, Braga became the Chairman of the Provisional Government of the Portuguese Republic on October 6, 1910, and Acting Head of State. He held these positions until August 24, 1911, when he stepped down as President, and September 3, when he resigned as Prime Minister.
Later Political Career
Following the resignation of Manuel de Arriaga, Braga was elected as interim President in 1915 to complete his term. He passed away in 1924 and was buried in the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon.
