Early Life and Career
Born in 1929, Joaquín Capilla Pérez began his illustrious diving career at a young age. In 1948, at the age of 19, he made history by becoming the first Mexican diver to win an Olympic medal, taking home the bronze in the 10-meter platform event at the London Games.
Olympic Silver and Gold
Capilla continued his Olympic journey with a silver medal in platform diving at the 1952 Helsinki Games. His crowning achievement came at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, where he triumphed in the same event, narrowly edging out American Gary Tobian by just 0.03 points. Despite protests from the U.S. team, Capilla's victory stood.
