Career as a Footballer

Born in Montbéliard, France, Joël Bats began his football career at FC Sochaux-Montbéliard in 1974. He spent four seasons with Sochaux before moving to AJ Auxerre in 1980, where he became the starting goalkeeper. Bats played 184 matches for Auxerre over five seasons.

In 1985, Bats joined Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). He became Ligue 1 champion in his first season with the club, playing 38 matches. Over seven years with PSG, Bats made 254 appearances. He retired from playing in 1992.

International Career

Bats made his debut for the France national football team on September 7, 1983, in a match against Denmark. He was the starting goalkeeper for France's victorious campaign at the 1984 UEFA European Championship, playing in the final against Spain. Bats also played as the starting goalkeeper for France at the 1986 FIFA World Cup, where the team finished in third place. In total, he made 50 appearances for France and retired from international football in 1989.

Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Bats remained with PSG as a goalkeeper coach. In 1994, he became assistant manager to PSG coach Luis Fernandez. In 1996, Bats became joint-coach of PSG alongside Ricardo Gomes. The duo led PSG to victory in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1996.

In 1998, Bats became manager of LB Châteauroux, but failed to achieve significant success with the club. In 2000, he joined Olympique Lyonnais as goalkeeping coach, a position he holds to this day.
