Childhood and Musical BeginningsBorn in Germany, Franz Eduard Josef Hisel was a musical prodigy. He began playing the violin at a young age and soon embarked on a European tour, showcasing his skills in renowned opera houses.
Opera and Compositions
As a composer, Hisel created numerous operas, including "The Gypsies" (1778), "Antony and Cleopatra" (1779), and "The Apple Thief, or The Treasure Hunter" (1780). Many of his works featured librettos he wrote himself, exhibiting his versatility in both music and literature.
Literary Pursuits
Hisel's literary talents extended beyond opera librettos. He penned historical novels such as "Ruins of Antiquity" (1790) and "The Sages of Scheshian" (1797), as well as erotic and satirical writings like "Hogarthian Sketches for the Inexperienced, Lustful, and Connoisseurs" (1805). He also wrote extensively about theater, including the book "The Virtue of the Stage and Its Benefits" (1801).
Publishing and Later Career
From the early 19th century, Riga became Hisel's primary base. He continued to perform as a musician but also became an active publisher. He established the newspaper "Nordisches Archiv" (1803-1809), which featured articles by Wilhelm Friedrich von Keiserler. He also published several books, including "Necessary Explanations for August von Kotzebue's 'The Most Remarkable Year of My Life'" (1802).
Alleged Plagiarism
However, Hisel's reputation as a publisher was tarnished by allegations of plagiarism. His "Statistical Descriptions of Modern Russia" (1809) was accused of being stolen from other works.
