Johann Jakob Heckel was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1790. Originally pursuing studies in agriculture, Heckel later dedicated himself to natural sciences, specializing in botany and ornithology. He excelled as an illustrator and taxidermist.
Specialization in Ichthyology
Heckel's passion for natural history led him to specialize in ichthyology. He collaborated closely with renowned ichthyologists of his time, including Georges Cuvier, Achille Valenciennes, and Charles Lucien Bonaparte.
Notable Contributions
Heckel's significant contribution to the field was his study of the cichlid collection assembled by his colleague Johann Natterer during expeditions to Brazil. One particular cichlid species, Acarichthys heckeli, was named in his honor.
Legacy and Later Years
In his later years, Heckel became a respected figure in Austrian science. However, his career was cut short at the age of 67 when he succumbed to a bacterial infection, likely acquired while working on a whale skeleton.
